News #108 - Hong Kong Post to stop accepting US parcels

18.04.2025

Effective immediately (April 16), Hongkong Post has announced the suspension of surface postal items containing goods destined for the United States.

In an official statement, Hongkong Post explained:
"The Government of the United States announced earlier that it would eliminate duty-free de minimis treatment for postal items dispatched from Hong Kong to the U.S. and impose higher tariffs on goods starting May 2. These measures are unreasonable and constitute abusive and bullying tactics. Hongkong Post will not collect any so-called tariffs on behalf of the U.S. and has decided to suspend the acceptance of postal items containing goods destined for the U.S."

The changes follow the April 2, 2025, announcement by the U.S. administration that imports from China and Hong Kong under the de minimis threshold (valued at less than $800) will now be subject to a 30% ad valorem duty or a flat fee of $25 per postal item, increasing to $50 per item as of June 1, 2025.

Return and Refund Procedures for Surface Postal Items

For senders who have already posted surface postal items containing goods that have not yet been shipped to the U.S., Hongkong Post will initiate a process to return the items and provide postage refunds. This service will begin on April 22.

Air Mail Services to the U.S.

In addition to surface mail, Hongkong Post will also suspend the acceptance of air mail items containing goods destined for the U.S. starting April 27.

The statement further advised the public in Hong Kong to prepare for exorbitant and unreasonable fees when sending items to the U.S. due to these new measures. However, postal items containing only documents (i.e., without goods) will remain unaffected.
