In this issue, we explore key takeaways from the 36th Annual CSCMP State of Logistics Report and introduce a new cross-border load board making waves in the industry.
2025: A Year of Supply Chain Resilience Under Trial
What began as a hopeful return to pre-pandemic freight conditions has instead evolved into a year of ongoing disruptions, testing the fragility of supply chains. The Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) has unveiled its latest State of Logistics Report, highlighting the challenges businesses face in navigating a landscape marked by uncertainty and rapid change.
“What is true today may not be true tomorrow in this rapidly changing landscape,” the report states.
Key Insights from the 2025 State of Logistics Report
U.S. Logistics Spending
Total logistics spending reached $2.58 trillion, maintaining its share of 8.8% of GDP—the same proportion as in 2023 but up from $2.45 trillion the previous year.
Ocean Freight
Costs surged 93% due to Asia–U.S. rate hikes, although relief is anticipated as new vessels enter service and tensions in the Red Sea diminish.
Railroads
Steady growth persists, but the sector must focus on smarter infrastructure and strategic partnerships to capitalize on nearshoring opportunities.
Airfreight
Spurred by e-commerce giants like Temu and Shein, airfreight saw an 11% surge in 2024, though growth is expected to taper to 5.8% in 2025.
Warehousing
The sector is stabilizing with a 6.7% vacancy rate, slower construction, and increased adoption of automation and AI-driven solutions.
3PLs (Third-Party Logistics Providers)
Leading the charge with expanded hubs, strengthened last-mile capabilities, and an aggressive push into data-driven operations and automation to navigate market volatility.
Global Logistics Output
Projected to grow 2% in the U.S. and 4.1% globally, with the global market set to reach $5.95 trillion by 2030, reflecting a 7.2% compound annual growth rate (CAGR).
Mark Baxa, CSCMP’s CEO, underscores the need for resilience, stating:
“Today’s logistics leaders are operating in a world of rapid shifts and persistent uncertainty—a true fog of global commerce. As the fog thickens, the logistics industry must move beyond short-term fixes. Resilience is no longer a luxury but a strategic imperative.”
Sustainability Takes a Back Seat
Sustainability, once a top priority, has faced setbacks as businesses redirect focus toward immediate supply chain challenges. While the European Union is championing stricter mandates, U.S.-based companies face hurdles due to limited federal support for green initiatives. This shift has forced many to reassess sustainability targets and prioritize strategies with more tangible financial returns.
Korhan Acar, partner at Kearney and lead author of the report, emphasizes the importance of progress:
“As AI and automation drive down the cost of building resilient supply chains, the greater risk now lies in standing still.”
Looking Ahead
As the logistics landscape evolves, resilience and adaptability remain paramount. The 2025 State of Logistics Report serves as a timely reminder that navigating uncertainty requires innovation, foresight, and a commitment to long-term strategies.
