Since the beginning of 2024, the total volume of goods transported through seaports is estimated to have increased by approximately 14%, reaching over 570 million tons. Among these, dry goods and containers account for a significant proportion, with handled volumes exceeding 321 million and 191 million tons, respectively.
Additionally, the expansion of industrial zones, which play a central role in the export supply chain, has also contributed to increased demand for logistics.
Vietnam's logistics sector is experiencing significant transformations, supported by the government's efforts and initiatives.
Strategic seaports such as Lạch Huyện (Hai Phong) and Cái Mép-Thị Vải (Ba Ria-Vung Tau) continue to receive investment for upgrades, providing momentum for the maritime transport segment, a cornerstone of logistics.
In particular, the adoption of technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and supply chain management (SCM) systems has been strongly encouraged, enhancing productivity and management efficiency.
Furthermore, policies promoting trade, attracting international investment, and leveraging the advantages of next-generation free trade agreements (FTAs) are being actively implemented by the government.
In recent years, Vietnam's logistics sector has grown at a rate of about 14-16%, with an annual scale of approximately USD 40-42 billion. According to the World Bank rankings, Vietnam currently ranks 43rd out of 155 countries in logistics efficiency and is among the top five countries in ASEAN.
In 2023, 7.919 new logistics enterprises were established nationwide, bringing the total to over 5.000 active logistics companies. Some enterprises have demonstrated regional and international competitiveness. Vietnam leads ASEAN in the number of businesses licensed for maritime transport to and from the United States.
In the first nine months of 2024, nearly 6.500 logistics companies were newly registered nationwide, with a total registered capital of VND 36,55 trillion and nearly 28.900 registered workers. This represents a 13,5% increase in the number of companies and an 18,3% increase in workforce, though registered capital decreased by 11,3% compared to the same period in 2023.
A survey by Vietnam Report shows that the logistics business community is optimistic about the prospects for 2025, continuing the recovery trend of 2024. In a general outlook on the logistics sector, 29,4% of respondents expressed slight optimism, while 11,8% were very optimistic.
From the perspective of enterprises, 64,7% anticipate a slightly better situation, and 17,6% expect it to be much better. Only 5,9% predict significant challenges, reflecting strong confidence in the robust and sustainable recovery of the sector.
Looking ahead to the final year of the 2021-2025 Socio-Economic Development Plan, the logistics industry is leveraging opportunities from global supply chain shifts, ramping up investments, and adopting technologies to solidify its vital role in the economy.
