News #202612 - Asia is no longer just a "Factory": ASEAN+3 emerges as the world's No. 1 consumer hub

07.04.2026

ASEAN+3 is currently the world's largest market, accounting for 28% of total global final demand.

The ASEAN+3 region—comprising the 10 ASEAN nations, China, Japan, and South Korea—has risen to become the world's largest market in terms of final consumer demand. It accounts for up to 28% of global final demand, surpassing the United States (26%) as of 2022. This is the prominent conclusion in a recent report by the ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO) titled "ASEAN+3 confronts severe energy shock from a position of strength," released in early April 2026.

The shift in the "global epicenter" of demand

The AMRO report emphasizes that this fluctuation is not merely a statistical figure but reflects a profound repositioning of where the world's production is ultimately "absorbed." Two decades ago, nearly one-third of the export value from ASEAN+3 was directed toward consumer demand in the United States; by 2022, this proportion had decreased to approximately 20%, giving way to internal demand within the ASEAN+3 region, which reached nearly 30%. This indicates that "Asia is increasingly producing for itself," reversing the traditional image of the region as merely a "factory" dependent on Western markets.

A "stronger" position against energy shocks

Despite facing a sharp energy price shock due to conflicts in the Middle East in 2026, ASEAN+3 economies are assessed to have "entered the crisis from a position of greater strength compared to previous periods." AMRO points out three key factors: more efficient energy use, lower dependence on crude oil, low initial inflation, and the fact that most economies still have policy space to respond.

The report also highlights a deep structural transition: regional production networks are becoming increasingly tight-knit, where the technological capabilities of Japan and South Korea, the dynamism of ASEAN, and the scale of China complement one another. Simultaneously, on the demand side, ASEAN+3 has become the primary "absorption basin" for global production, with a final demand share of up to 28%.

As data indicates that ASEAN+3 is consuming its own products, the AMRO report sends a clear signal: the world economic map has changed, and the center of gravity for global consumer demand is tilting heavily toward the Asian region.
