News #125 - Global Airfreight Prices Show Signs of Recovery Amid Seasonal Trends

15.08.2025

Global airfreight prices recorded an uptick last week, according to the latest figures from TAC Index, a leading provider of air cargo price benchmarks. The global Baltic Air Freight Index (BAI00), calculated by TAC, rose 2.2% in the week ending August 11 — a notable increase during what is traditionally a softer period in the airfreight calendar. This gain places the index just 1.8% below its level from the same period last year.

Hong Kong’s newly introduced BAI Spot indices reflected consistent upward momentum, with the composite index for outbound traffic from Hong Kong (BAI30) advancing 2.1% week-on-week, although it remains 7.1% lower year-on-year. Outbound rates from Shanghai (BAI80) increased by 0.8% week-on-week, narrowing the year-on-year gap to 4.1% below 2024 levels.

Vietnam saw stronger rates to both Europe and the United States, whereas India experienced declines in both directions.

European outbound traffic registered rate decreases to China and Japan, while transatlantic lanes to the United States strengthened. Among newly tracked lanes, rates to Australia dropped, but shipments to Brazil, Mexico, India, and South Africa posted gains. Frankfurt’s outbound index (BAI20) surged 6.6% week-on-week, pushing it 3.5% above last year’s figure. London’s outbound index (BAI40) maintained robust growth, climbing 8.5% week-on-week and marking an impressive 34.2% year-on-year increase.

In the United States, rates to Europe rose, while those to China and South America fell, except on the newly launched lane to Brazil. Chicago’s outbound index (BAI50) declined 4.9% week-on-week, standing 1.5% lower compared with the same period last year.

These developments underscore the nuanced dynamics of the global airfreight sector, where seasonal patterns, trade lane performance, and evolving demand create a highly variable pricing environment. While certain markets are showing sustained growth momentum, others face downward pressure — reinforcing the importance for industry stakeholders to track market trends closely and adapt strategies accordingly.
