The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has underscored the indispensable role of air cargo in ensuring perishable goods reach their destinations in optimal condition. According to IATA’s CargoIS platform, air-transported fresh produce experienced an impressive 8% growth in 2024, with fruits and vegetables accounting for nearly a third of this expanding market.
Key Growth Trends in Perishable Cargo
Certain categories of perishables saw significant growth in 2024:
Cool goods (temperature-controlled items): +45%.
Meat: +21%.
One of the busiest international routes for fruit and vegetable logistics was between Mumbai and London Heathrow, driven by demand from the UK's Indian diaspora. Domestically, the Philippines' hubs at Davao and Manila also recorded notable activity in perishable freight.
Brendan Sullivan, IATA's Global Head of Cargo, emphasized the significance of these developments:
"The growth in perishable goods volumes highlights the vital role air cargo plays in helping farmers, production companies, and traders get their produce from the farm to the supermarket shelf."
Air Cargo's Strategic Importance
While air freight accounts for less than 1% of global trade volume, it represents nearly 35% of global trade value. For perishable goods, this mode of transport is indispensable, enabling modern supply chains to thrive by ensuring speed, reliability, and freshness.
As demand for perishables continues to grow, air cargo remains a critical component of global trade, bridging producers and consumers across vast distances and ensuring quality preservation at every step.
